Blog Post #8 Uses for Google Docs For Learning

A school community must embrace diversity among its constituents by engaging in cultural differences and discussions through various forms of communication. There are so many types of communication such as, written, oral, technological, and social engagement. In today’s times, the best way to engage the most input from the school community is through the use of technology, like web 2.0 tools and resources. One such tool is the use of Google Docs.

As a graduate student at UTEP, I have learned the importance of collaborating with other colleagues both face to face and virally. In several courses, I have utilized Google Docs within project groups. Busy schedules and multiple commitments are a typical way of life for most people; therefore, the ability to communicate and gather information from multiple sources without meeting together is immeasurable. At Immanuel, I oversee the Campus Improvement Team (CIT), which has 22 members. The ability to communicate via Google Docs has been simply timesaving. As a principal, I utilize Google Docs when devising and writing the CIP (Campus Improvement Plan). The importance of having buy- in from the team is an integral element in the writing of the plan. Google Docs gives me the opportunity to have the members provide written ideas and thoughts for the objectives, goals, and strategies of the CIP. Instead of meeting each time face to face, every member has access and availability to the document at any time. They can edit, input, and create ideas that will affect the school community; therefore, when we meet together, we are already familiar with the document.

In the article,”5 Time Saving Ways Teachers Use Google Forms,” there were several ideas in which educators utilized the special formatting in Google Forms. The use of surveys is used throughout our school community; within the classroom, student body, and parental community. In 12th grade, Mrs. Corpus, our Physics teacher, utilizes Google Forms for surveys concerning the homework, projects, and assignments on a weekly basis. She sends out a weekly survey where the students must answer what they learned, what they would change about the lesson, and what two essential questions pertain to the lesson. She also uses the grading rubric format on Google Forms for her projects.

One of the programs in Google Docs, called Google Translate is mentioned in the article, “10 Things Every Teacher Should Know How to Do with Google Docs.” Our Language Lab facilitator, Mr. Rutkowski, utilizes Google Translate in his curriculum. He plays a review game with his students every Friday just for fun. Our Rosetta Stone Lab offers 22 languages for the students to learn, so Mr. Rutkowski selects one language every Friday to help the children pick up simple phrases that make them laugh. The students look forward to this time because of the humor element; however, they love using the program Google Translate as well. The student who finds the translation in English for the most words wins a free dress pass. Mr. Rutkowski then provides a graph of the answers on Google Sheets. He is an amazing technology teacher, but even more he understands the importance of learning something new while having fun. In my opinion, this is “true learning.”

Learning about the use of technology can be overwhelming, but the realization of its power helps the most reluctant learner become efficient and effective in the world of education and communication. Having the video tutorials has been a lifesaver for me because I am a visual learner. Watching the teacher go through the process has shown me that the learning comes one step at a time. Taking the first step is the fearful part of the journey; the second part is overcoming the fear and using the wonderful resources available in connecting with others.

  1. I use Google translate sometimes. However, I have not thought of using Google Translate as Mr. Rutkowski, utilizes it. I agree with you regarding "learning about the use of technology can be overwhelming", but it is very powerful in our times. Educators might expend time learning and preparing lessons using the current technology, but this might be only at the beginning, later this might be more helpful saving time and gaining experience with our students. We have to think a little bit how take advantages from it. And use it.
    Thanks,
    Maria

  2. I completely agree with you, when it comes to planning it can be difficult to do due to everyone’s busy schedules. Google Drive allows educators to collaborate with your colleagues and can be easily accessed from anywhere that has internet access. Google Drive tools gives everyone an opportunity to share their ideas and thoughts.

  3. Linda,
I completely agree with you on the necessity of technology as a means for managing time and collaboration. Online courses and communities have proved invaluable to me. Like you said, managing various commitments can make it hard to meet with peers and colleagues. Google docs and the tools it provides can make for a more inclusive manner of doing things, whether at work or school.

  4. I can only imagine how much google docs help you as a principal, this technology is a fantastic feature for our type of work. It provides us immediate communication within our peers to create, correct and share material, forms and information immediately. I use this at work and plan to use it with my students in the near future, as they have access to internet.

    1. Hi Alex,
I have not been able to comment on your post. I was so glad to see that you were in my class this time. I keep trying to open up your posts and it says that there are none available. I thought you might have dropped the class. Blessings,
      Linda

  5. I had also never used Google Docs until I needed to collaborate with group members on assignments. I think Google is a great tool as a teacher, to be able to work with colleagues, parents and students! I use Google docs when I am completing lesson plans with my partner teacher. We work on lesson plans together and share them with each other so that we both have access to them to edit them online. When we are done with our lesson plans, we are then able to send them to our administrator, buy sharing them with her. I like that you are able to share a document and can choose whether the person you are sharing with can also edit it or will only be able to view the document without editing.

  7. Hey Linda,
I enjoyed reading your post on this weeks Google topic. You provided great examples and insight on how you and your staff utilize the different Google platforms in your everyday work. I enjoyed the system of weekly surveys by your Physics teacher, that is a great way to reflect and include students in on their own education.

  8. Hello Linda,
You pointed out great ways to use google drive features in many areas within a school community. I am bilingual in English and Spanish and many times my colleagues come to me for help with translations. Honestly, I had heard of google translate but because I find it easy to translate myself I really never tried it until this assignment. It's a great resource, and it makes it faster. Thank you for your insight.
